Prior to v2.24.0 (January 2021), Prometheus had no built-in authentication — the web UI on port 9090 and /metrics endpoint were open to anyone with network access. From v2.24.0, basic authentication and TLS are available but must be explicitly enabled via a web-config.yml file.
